Closing Ceremony of The Palme d'Or 2014

After 11 days of films, the Cannes Film Festival wrapped up last Saturday night with the Closing Ceremony. The top prize, the Palme d'Or, went to Winter Sleep.

The 'Fairmined' Palme d'Or by Chopard

President Jane Campion, winner of the Palme d'Or in 1993 for her film 'The Piano', and her jury including Carole Bouquet, Leila Hatami, Sofia Coppola, Willem Dafoe, Nicolas Winding Refn, Jeon Do-yeon, Jia Zhangke and Gael Garcia Bernal picked the prizes from this year’s selection of 18 films in competition. Iconic French actor Lambert Wilson served as master of ceremonies at the event. Cannes Film Festival president Gilles Jacob, who will step down after this year, received a long standing ovation at the event.

Pulp Fiction director Quentin Tarantino and star Uma Thurman, in town for a 20th anniversary celebration of their film, announced the winner of the Palme d'Or. Winter Sleep, directed by Turkish filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylan, is an epic story of a marriage starring Haluk Bilginer, Melisa Sozen and Demet Akbag.

Ceylan dedicated his award "to the young people of Turkey who have lost their lives during the last year," and thanked the festival's Thierry Fremaux and Jacob for supporting "such a long film." (The film was the longest in the competition at 3 hours, 16 minutes.)

The runner-up Grand Prize went to The Wonders (Les Merveilles), a coming-of-age story set in the Northern Italian countryside, by director Alice Rohrwacher.

Foxcatcher helmer Bennett Miller won for best director. His film, based on a true, tragic story, stars Channing Tatum, Steve Carell and Mark Ruffalo.

The jury prize was given to two films: Mommy by Xavier Dolan and Goodbye to Language by Jean-Luc Godard. Dolan, who is 25 years old, had his two previous films also play in Cannes, in the Directors’ Fortnight and Un Certain Regard sections. He gave an emotional speech, and specifically thanked Campion for the influence The Piano has had over his work, inspiring him to write roles for strong women, "not victims, not objects."

Timothy Spall, the star of Mike Leigh’s biopic Mr. Tuner, won the best actor prize. The film centers on the life of British painter J.M.W. Turner. The actor was moved to tears while delivering his acceptance speech, was was briefly interrupted by his beeping cellphone.
"I've often been a bridesmaid and this is the first time I have ever been a bride," he told the audience. "This is a lifelong collaboration with Mike Leigh and this is as much an accolade for Mr. Leigh as me."

Julianne Moore, who was absent from the Closing Ceremony,
won Best Actress for her role in David Cronenberg's Maps to the Stars.

Some more Cannes 2014 Red Carpet impressions ...

All eyes were on the cast and crew of Winter Sleep last saturday, winner of the 67th Cannes Film Festival Palme d'Or, as the colorful closing ceremony saw the biggest stars of the silver screen rub shoulders with top models on the red carpet. Vogue Paris June/July 2014 cover girl and L'Oréal Paris brand ambassador Natasha Poly wore an elegant white VIONNET gown with a plunging neckline, complimented with jewelry by Shamballa Jewels. With classic Vionnet draping and cut, the president Goga Ashkenazi and creative director Hussein Chalayan at the French fashion house designed the gown especially for the model.

DIOR Beauty Suite in Cannes

For the past eight years at the Cannes Film Festival, models and actresses have headed the DIOR Suite in the Hôtel Majestic Barrière, to have their make-up expertly handed by the DIOR Pro Make-Up Team, headed up by Violette. This year, the luxury space was refurnished as a live DIOR backstage area, to welcome stars including Eva Herzigova, Olga Kurylenko, Nadja Auermann and Cécile Cassel. Relive the highlights here ...

DIOR's make-up artist Violette

The suite Christian Dior on the 6th floor of the Hôtel MajesticBarrière has been entirely decorated in the style of no. 30, avenue Montaigne, the historic headquarters of the Parisian couturier. In addition to exceptionally elegant furnishings, the suite provides its guests with a range of remarkable facilities and the services of a personal butler.

This spacious 450qm two-bedroom apartment was firnished with supreme elegance, reflected in the smallest details: silks and velvets, embroidered be linene and photographic works. In the opulent drawing room the cushions on the sofa echo Christian Dior's historic pleated design in the dazzling shade of red he invented himself 1947.

The windows of the DIOR Suite in Cannes mirror the Mediterranean sea

In the dining room, under a cupola which evokes  the ceiling at No. 30 Avenue Montaigne, stands an imposing Louis XVI style table, surrounded by the characteristic medallion chairs upholstered in grey and silver. The suite Christian Dior is a perfect reflection of the Parisian fashion house's sophisticated savoir-faire.

Some Couture Moments ...

 'VIONNET Spring 2014 Demi-Couture'

There are two ways to approach the task Hussein Chalayan accepted when he signed on to produce a demi-couture collection for Goga Ashkenazi's Vionnet.

“Chalayan is one of the most creative and provocative designers working in fashion today”, states Ashkenazi. “I have always been intrigued by his conceptual approach and the fearless way his work travels outside the traditional confines of fashion. It is an honor for me to work with someone I admire so much. I know he will bring something special to Vionnet’s Demi-Couture collection”.

The Beautiful Sound of Silence - From the sparkling dew of a Spring dawn to a garden in bountiful bloom, GEORGES HOBEIKA’s Spring/Summer 2014 Haute Couture collection envisions nature’s gorgeous harmony.

Another 'Throwback' to Paris Haute Couture with some wonderful backstage moments on Giambattista Valli Spring/Summer 2014 Haute Couture.

Throwback to Paris Haute Couture with some of my backstage moments on VALENTINO Spring/Summer 2014 Haute Couture.

The Stéphane Rolland's Haute Couture collection, for Spring/Summer 2014, is a real sunset. A warm color palette, from orange mango to yellow, mixed with tangerine, saffron and a touch of black and white. The models' silhouette is wrapped in garments that resemble sculptures without ever appearing rigid.

'ALEXANDRE VAUTHIER Spring 2014 Couture'

Alexandre Vauthier pumped up the artistic side of his Spring/Summer 2014 Couture collection. Braided leather added edge and texture to his body-hugging looks, while macramé tops and dresses — some were entirely knotted from hand-woven ropes — gave off an ethnic flair. Alexander Vauthier is somewhat beach-bound, giving surf gear a sleek revamp, sans a pair of sunglasses or a neon bikini in sight.

'Promise Of Spring - ELIE SAAb Spring 2014 Couture'

INSPIRED by the work of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, the nineteenth-century Dutch artist painted scenes from the Roman Empire. His subjects always seemed to be reclining amid marble statuary, and there was a good chance that the Mediterranean Sea was shimmering in the background.

'The Cambon Club | CHANEL Spring 2014 Couture'

Minimalist staging set the tone for the Chanel Spring/Summer 2014 Haute Couture show. Beneath the domed glass ceiling of the Grand Palais, a stage consisting of glowing white walls and polished steel panels revealed a large staircase from which models emerged at the show’s opening.

'ARMANI Prive´Spring 2014 Couture'

The fashion proceedings, which you see here, were centered on two of Giorgio Armani’s career-long themes: his interest in Asian cultures, filtered through his deep love of early black-and-white movies. Both influences were apparent in almost everything he showed.

'Zuhair Murad Spring 2014 Couture'

Inspirations straight from Garden Eden, the mystical garden segment of Zuhair Murad's Spring/Summer 2014 Couture collection overall contained a multitude of camellias, roses, peonies, gentian, and more, all shimmering atop gowns, jumpsuits, and cocktail frocks.

'Bejeweled Impact by Giambattista Valli Spring 2014 Couture'

Most outstanding: a beautiful strapless dress with a pale ivory whoosh of tulle skirt and a pale pink bodice with a veiled flower embroidery, anchored with a deep black ribbon, tied in a bow.

Some days before Paris Haute Couture Week,  I relished an exceptional couture moment with Albrecht Ollendiek in his Frankfurt based haute couture showroom. A very private appointment in a very private space of haute couture - Saalgasse 10, Frankfurt. So excited, because Albrecht is one of my favourite couturiers since more than 15 years and his annual couture shows at Schlosshotel Kronberg are renomed as a fashionable highlight in the Rhein-Main area.

'Ethereal Haute Couture by VALENTINO'

The design duo of the moment,  Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli took their inspiration for the VALENTINO Spring 2014 Haute Couture from "the most fantastical Italian opera possible". They took us in a "beyond exquisite" embroidered flora and fauna - Garden of Eden - the runway was a special hand painted catwalk, painted by the Roman operatic house.

'3-D Floral Sequins by DIOR Spring 2014 Couture'

When Raf Simons arrived at Christian Dior nearly two years ago, he had to personally meet every single member of the ateliers who painstakingly labor to create things of such lyrical beauty that oftentimes it barely looks like a human hand has ever touched them. Flash ahead to this week, and Simons used his exquisite spring 2014 couture to honor all that les petites mains do at Dior.

'Atelier Versace Spring 2014 Couture'

"A juxtaposition of glamour and mystery, with cinched-in poise meeting the fluidity and provocation of Grace Jones. Different ways with draping: sculpted and controlled to highlight the lines of sleek tailoring, or liberated and sensual for fluid silk jersey dresses."
