Promise Of Spring - ELIE SAAB S/S 2014 Couture

INSPIRED by the work of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, the nineteenth-century Dutch artist painted scenes from the Roman Empire. His subjects always seemed to be reclining amid marble statuary, and there was a good chance that the Mediterranean Sea was shimmering in the background. Elie Saab set out to capture a bit of that idyllic ambiance with his new couture show. His pastel colors blush pink, hydrangea blue, and lilac were lifted from an Alma-Tadema canvas, and the collection’s empire waists and gently draped volumes were suggestive of classical dress.

Elie Saab's couture collection was a floral fairytale, culminating in the most spectacular, ethereal bride with a giant train trailing behind her - the perfect couture week heroine, which was an impressive move considering Cara Delevingne's marriage pose at CHANEL's Spring/Summer '14 Haute Couture show with Karl Lagerfeld could otherwise have been the most enduring image.

Prints traced with the ethereal grace of a watercolour… 
the imperial purple gowns that gracefully floated down the runway … ravishing floral tones, an homage to Spring ... #PromiseOfSpring

It ran in a romantic palette from soft pink to coral and champagne to powder blue, purple and black, every dress a confectionery of floral embellishment and appliqué. Later, dégradé dresses fell from black to pink or featured a smudged floral print of their own, all the better to show off their glittering outer layers.

Empire-line minidresses, chiffon-draped princess gowns with additional chiffon sashes at the neck, sheer bejewelled sheaths with skinny belted waists and huge bustle hipped wedding gowns, this was about dreamy fashion that transcends continents, age, trend or season. "Women often ask me for dresses like the bridal one I showed today," said Saab after the show. "They want their dreams to come true and that's what we try to do."
