Bottega Veneta Pre-Fall 2014

What a pretty pre-fall collection from Tomas Maier. The Bottega Veneta creative director gave us color, a wide range of looks, and chic bags and shoes that seemed tuned in to real life. There’s not a lot more women want from a transitional season and, from a store’s perspective, a thoughtful, beautiful selection such as this should have a long, healthy life.

Maier’s touch when it comes to luxury is remarkable. He knows how to make things that look like what they cost, which, in the era of the $1,000 sweatshirt, isn’t always the case. For instance, witness the craftsmanship in a hot pink and black strapless cocktail number that was a glorious mash-up of floral silk jacquard, strips of laminated chiffon, foil panels, and guipure lace. “It’s all about surface and making materials that don’t already exist,” Maier said. It’s no small order. All that hard work wasn’t squandered either, as Maier used that same fabric, also in orange, for day dresses too.

There were less flashy alternatives, including an oxblood crepe dress with elbow length sleeves. It was subdued in color and foundation which is not a bad thing but then adorned with undulating pieces of monochromatic foiled wool, in shapes that mimicked chrysanthemums, and then there was a panel of fabric cloaking one shoulder, almost like a petal. “The idea came from buds opening and then falling when you leave them on the table in a vase for too long,” Maier explained. What else was good? Well a sheared shearling white coat with a graphic black intarsia pattern and a long, sleeveless evening look with almost deconstructed copper foil and then a streak of shocking pink in the back, to name a few.

As for the bags, Maier took a couple of the men’s styles, like a woven messenger with a nylon sport strap, and adapted them for women (which is how many women shop already). One was even paired with an evening look, which, for anyone fatigued by cramming too much stuff into a minaudière, felt like a relief. As did the kitten heel on Maier’s new Mary Jane, mostly gray and black with pops of those bright hues and an exaggerated bow.
