Shortly after Burberry’s Christopher Bailey affectionately referred to the fashion industry as both “brilliant . . . and ridiculous” in his CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund speech last month, he reminisced about starting his career working sixteen-plus-hour days for Donna Karan and Tom Ford. For the last eleven years, of course, Bailey has been ensconced at Burberry and in that time has masterfully established his individual vision for the house. (Truly, anyone who is able to reinvent the trench coat season after season in ways that look new and exciting is pretty remarkable.) But recently, is there a subtle trace in his clothes of his early days working for people so focused on accentuating and empowering the female form? Buberry's Spring 2013, after all, was a glorious parade of satin corset dresses that clung to the body like the media to the Duchess of Cambridge’s every move. For pre-fall, the playful eroticism has been toned down a tinge, but the silhouette remains close very, very close to the curves.

Rigorous cocktail frocks in navy and claret with hand pleating on the bust had a sort of serious sexiness about them while slim-fitting turtlenecks worn with second-skin skirts drew sinuous lines broken up only by graphic patterns: stripes, color-blocking, and a black-and-white splatter print on calfskin. The effect was reminiscent of the mod graphicness that came through in the spring collections but in a much more neutral (and wearable) palette. They were topped off almost exclusively with cool, cropped jackets, including a quilted leather puffer in bold black and tan stripes and this season’s motorcycle jacket a short, tough number in black leather lined in the most exquisite, caramel-colored mink. Some may find such indulgence a little over-the-top, but the dream of slipping it on for a chilly, early autumn day that’s brilliant.
