"Be your own Oasis", said Diane von Furstenberg before the show, "what I'm hoping is that people feel joie de vivre, happiness, and beauty in a world that is so rough, so unpredictable, and so scary".

NYFW | Jason Wu Spring/Summer 2014

"Let the fabric do the magic", in doing so, Jason Wu created something special for his spring 2014 show. "I wanted to let the body speak for itself", Wu said backstage.

There were only a handful of overtly evening looks, and even those were sporty tank dresses, albeit with incredibly worked trains. But in a way, now that anything goes for night, it all would work for after dark. It’s as if Wu’s loosening up his definitions as well as his seams.

From the moment Karen Elson opened Jason Wu’s spring show wearing a loose, shimmering gold-beaded halter dress with touches of matching metal on her eyelids, you could sense a shift. This wasn’t the hard, sharp, power look Wu often leans into. “It’s about easy,” he said later backstage. Which is what a lot of designers say, but it’s notable for Wu because he’s not one for kicking back. Did you know that in addition to heading his own collection, creative directing for Hugo Boss, spearheading a new makeup collaboration with Lancôme and furniture line for Canvas, he also designs faucets? Flyers for his collaboration with bath-fixture company Brizo were on every seat. But then, maybe that’s why taking it easy is at the front of Wu’s mind.

Okay, so what does it mean for the clothes? Think languid, sparkling, and cut on the bias. A thin, ribbed silk sweater tucked into a sage green beaded skirt. Breezy, unclingy slip dresses in lace and tulle falling to mid calf and worn with ankle-wrap flat sandals.

But Wu didn’t forsake construction entirely. Corsets and exposed boning peeked out from the back of halter dresses, and the brushed cotton shorts and jackets had that slight military touch Wu can’t seem to resist.
