Matisse-inspirations by Aquilano.Rimondi Spring 2015

The notes to Aquilano.Rimondi’s Spring 2015 show began with a Matisse quote and multiple references to the Chapel of Saint-Paul de Vence. “What I dream of is an art of balance, purity, and serenity ... rather like a good armchair,” went the Matisse. And as to whether fashion equals a good armchair, well, that wasn’t entirely clear. What was evident is that Tommaso Aquilano and Roberto Rimondi are lovers of texture, of asymmetry, of (often unexpected) pleats, of suiting and stitching and East Asian influence, vibrant hues, and sometimes all of the above, all at once.

Raw linen mixed with treated leather and lighter duchesse, chiffon, raffia, and organza. Some skirts were left to fray lightly at the edges, while others, kilt-like, were slung across the hips and belted loosely at the side. Some skirts were straight in the front and pleated at the back. Some were shorts in the front and also pleated at the back. There was sharp, short-sleeved suiting with the seams picked out in constrast stitching, there were embroidery and appliqué and vertiginous flat-forms and heels with balletic, loose ties that called to mind foot-binding, for one reviewer. There was openwork jacquard on raffia for an oversize pea coat and sheer shirtdresses, floral-embroidered satin minidresses, and thin, leather harness straps.

But most winning were a series of relatively straightforward looks: A garden-party-perfect hand-printed duchesse silk frock harkened back to Matisse, while a subtle and simple nude dress, nipped in at the waist by a smoky PVC belt and topped with a scrunched gray shrug, would take you from work to anywhere you wanted to go. It was understated, it was flattering, it was indubitably, effortlessly chic, and frankly, it’s exactly what most women will want to wear.
