Glam-Pop Fur by VERSACE Fall/Winter 2014/15

“Gianni used to collect vintage military uniforms and medals,” said Donatella Versace in a side conversation after a preview at the Palazzo Versace on Via Gesu in Milan. Hence, the epaulets that sprouted from the shoulders of her jackets and coats, and the lines of metallic frogging that were strategically implanted beneath the breast on the curvy, asymmetrically hemmed dresses that sashayed out at the beginning of her runway show.

The result? Well, it wasn’t exactly “army” in the combat sense. When Donatella is in action, the only beat she marches to is music. Her militia references turned out to be more in the realms of Michael Jackson or Prince  merged with a few lashings of Western fringing, and outcrops of bright, glam-pop fur. All part of her eternally evolving uniform for rock chicks on the prowl.

Still, by the standards of this house, the fall collection was a relatively more relaxed affair, with plenty of day-appropriate trophy jackets and short coats shaggy burgundy shearling, teal fringed leather, an intricate, diagonally pieced black-and-blue fur starring on the runway. A few of these were shrugged over short dresses whose skirts fluttered off at one side as the models strode forward in their elaborate suede stiletto boots. “I wanted something less fitted, more sensual and linear,” Donatella said. “And I found that through bias-cutting.”

Naturally, when it comes to the business of owning the night, there’s always a moment for the killer-sexy Versace dress. True to form fitted, micro-short, cut-out and embroidered form it was there, on parade toward the end. More interesting, though, she also had an option for the woman who might care to distinguish herself by standing coolly apart from the dress-wearing horde on the event-circuit: a slim, white tuxedo with minimal gold epaulets. Really quite special, that one.

'Atelier VERSACE Spring 2014 Couture'

“What do you want to wear this spring?” “What do you want to wear this season?” We quote the question posed by a young lady of Italian origins, Stefani Germanotta, at the Atelier Versace couture show. That’s Lady Gaga, of course, whose glorifying song “Donatella” from her album Artpop was pounding out, with its fabulous thumbnail-portrait of an intro “I’m blonde, I’m skinny . . . and I’m a little bit of a bitch” at the start of DV’s spring couture collection.

Enjoy the Atelier VERSACE Couture
presentation from 6th July, 2014!

LoL, Andrea
