Missoni Pre-Fall 2013

Have you ever wanted a Missoni coat? A sweater, definitely. A dress or skirt, absolutely. Even a pair of groovy knit pants, sure. But coats? They’ve never been the calling card of this family-owned Italian house and, now having seen the ones in the pre-fall collection, that seems a shame. Because classic shapes like a peacoat, oversize blazer, or fur-collared car coat are positively enlivened by variations of Angela Missoni’s colorful, patterned fabrics. The result is not Technicolor Dreamcoat (though in one or two extreme cases it can be); it’s more along the lines of all the patchwork that’s been on the runways the last few seasons.

For instance, the baby-blue houndstooth coat with four buttons down the front and lush, gray fur lapels is supremely ladylike; the black-and-tan checked blazer with pinstriped lapel and tiger-patterned sweater back feels sort of menswear and mod. A zip-up biker-style jacket made of a melange of animal-striped sleeves with two kinds of zigzag and houndstooth on the body is for the more adventurous, surely, but alternatively, the all-black versions that mix different textures would be effortless to throw on.

The collection as a whole was described as juxtaposing the masculine with the feminine and feline aggression. Presumably that last bit inspired the slinky crocheted slip dresses layered over, well, nothing, frankly. It’s likely they’ll be lined in production, and whether they are or not, they sure will look good underneath one of those great coats.
