Backstage II of Cercle Privé by CHANEL Fall 2015 Couture

This was a hands-down Lagerfeldian jackpot of a show Chanel couture at its controlled and civilized best, worn by models who walked single file around the roulette and blackjack tables. True, there was a distraction at the beginning Lagerfeld had been experimenting with 3-D printing to generate quilted, seamless jackets. But the context of the casino meant that everything needed to look classy rather than avant-garde and that worked wholly to the advantage of Lagerfeld.

It gave him the chance to present an almost eighties silhouette epauletted ivory pencil-skirted suits haven’t looked this good for decades. It allowed him to rethink a chic evening-pant look (such options, likewise, haven’t been available for half a generation), and to concentrate on a zillion alternative cocktail silhouettes, from a lovely tank dress with soft, pearl-embroidered tiers to a white-collared navy guipure lace midi coatdress. “I like the dressy effect,” Lagerfeld mused at the end of it all. So, surely, will his couture customers. When all is said and done, who would not want to bet her money on a long-lasting classic?

Dressed in Chanel and sporting exquisite platinum and diamond creations from the re-issue of the house’s 1932 “Bijoux de Diamants” collection - the only high jewelry collection ever created by Gabrielle Chanel - they were the epitome of elegance as they embraced the gambling spirit. Ever the perfectionist, Chanel ensured no detail was spared for this ephemeral game space: the slot machines sported references to 31 rue Cambon, Camellias and Mademoiselle Chanel’s fetish numbers (5 in particular); locked-Cs came interspersed with playing card motifs to form a monogram on the geometric gray and beige carpet.

Backstage of 'Cercle Privé' by CHANEL Fall 2015 Couture

An Art Deco-inspired casino – built from scratch in the main hall of the Grand Palais – set the stage for the Fall-Winter 2015/16 Haute Couture collection, replete with slot machines and roulette and blackjack tables manned by croupiers. Meandering through this chic Cercle Privé casino were a selection of handpicked guests, with Karl Lagerfeld adding to the excitement by inviting A-lister friends of the house (around 20 in total) to sit at tables in the casino’s center. Kristen Stewart led the way, followed by Julianne Moore, Geraldine Chaplin, Isabelle Huppert, Rita Ora, Stella Tennant, Lara Stone and Lily Collins. Joining them were Vanessa Paradis, accompanied by her daughter Lily-Rose Depp, Alice Dellal and Violette d'Urso.

If the chic and cozy atmosphere of Chanel’s Cercle Privé casino appeared to be suspended in time, the 67 looks revealed by models walking in amongst the gamblers were undeniably of the now.

Karl Lagerfeld once again proves himself a visionary by combining new technology with the traditional know-how of Haute Couture. The house’s iconic suit comes revisited in a sumptuous 3D version showcasing the “Selective Laser Sintering” technique. Painted, beaded, satin-lined or edged with leather, it sets the tone for Haute Couture’s future, with no room for nostalgia. From architectural and graphic silhouettes punctuated with masculine details for the day to sumptuous evening looks with asymmetric lines, airy fabrics and a sophisticated palette, the Fall-Winter 2015/16 Haute Couture collection encompasses the boundless creative force of Chanel.

Karl Lagerfeld for the closing look of the Fall-Winter 2015/16 Haute Couture show had a surprise up his sleeve: his tuxedo bride. Out stepped Kendall Jenner in her white satin wedding suit. This was a pretty unconventional bride, her look subtly playing on masculine-feminine codes with its wide-shouldered, double-breasted jacket – sporting epaulettes, four pockets and two rows of buttons – with a camellia tacked to its lapel, matched with a slightly flared pant.

Accentuating the graphic yet relaxed lines of the tuxedo were the strap-on booties with geometric heels (the footwear look for all the collection, also in black and ivory). The only nod to tradition came in the form of the long embroidered tulle veil, which flowed from the shoulders to form a quirky train, lending a feminine twist to the silhouette.

Paris Haute Couture | Atelier VERSACE Fall 2015 Couture

Fairies are real on the Atelier VERSACE runway, at least. For Fall, Donatella and co. sent out a parade of delicate pieces inspired by the flora and fauna of the forest. “It’s a bit romantic,” said Donatella Versace, sounding a touch surprised at herself. “I’m‎ not a piece of wood all the time!” So here was a softened-up, tendrilly vision for Atelier Versace: couture festival girls in garlanded headbands, vaguely Renaissance-medieval sleeves, and raw-edged chiffon trailing off in ethereal directions on a glass runway paved over hundreds of mauve, purple, and green orchids. 26,000 orchids were laid on the runway underneath glass panels, while a Medusa head made by the blooms framed the entrance to the runway.

One of Donatella Versace’s signatures is her smoky eye, but this season the designer and makeup guru Pat McGrath decided it was time to inject some color and brighten up. “We’re keeping it sexy but giving it a much lighter feel with pale, shimmery greens, using the same tone for every girl,” the face painter noted backstage before the show. “It’s much more romantic but still a little tough.” Continuing her thought, mane master Guido Palau added: “It’s about natural hair but very rock ’n’ roll and a little ’70s in a way really cool couture.” The pro left strands long and loose, then roughed them up with Redken Wind Blown texturizing spray. “They look like beautiful nymphs in gorgeous dresses with headbands,” he said. Speaking in chorus, the duo noted that once they saw the collection anchored by those leafy crowns, it instantly sealed the feel of their final beauty look: “It’s healthy, beautiful skin that glows to perfection,” explained McGrath of the high-fashion fairies who floated down the orchid-strewn runway. Based on high-gloss platform boots, thigh-grazing slits, and skin-baring cutouts, however, we have a feeling these otherworldly nymphs have a naughty side.

Was Donatella channeling a fantasy somewhere out of Stevie Nicks via Game of Thrones? Wherever the ideas originated, the results the dusty pastels and grays, the appearance of drifty, almost disintegrating fabrics were dispensed without harsh color, hard silhouettes, and logos. Still, the underpinnings relied on signature Versace craftsmanship: the network of boned corsetry glimpsed through chiffon, as well as the embroidery and use of chainmail all superb. In a preview, Donatella said some of the dresses had taken four to six hundred hours of work days of labor to make something so fitted it almost appears to have grown onto a girl’s body‎ rather than sewn by human hand. That’s the mystique of couture.

 Amid the corseting and pastel flowers came a gown worn by Daria Strokous 

complete with a voluminous, tiered skirt and a cutout over the thighs all the better to show off her strut.
